Schmid secures victory on Fichtelberg
Julian Schmid is the winner of the Men’s Individual Gundersen competition in Oberwiesenthal (GER), after already being in the lead after the Ski Jumping competition on the Fichtelbergschanze HS105.
After some rain during the FIS Youth Cup event in the morning, the men’s competition took place in a mix of sun and clouds.
The German jumped the furthest distance of the day with 110 meters (130.3 pts), setting a new hill record and securing the victory of the jumping round. Therefore, he was the first one to start into the 10 km race up the Fichtelberg this afternoon.
Rank 2 after jumping went to Franz-Josef Rehrl from Austria, who landed at 103.5 meters (124.2 pts) and went into the course 24 seconds after Schmid.
Johannes Rydzek from Germany (100.5 mts, 119.5 pts) placed third, 43 seconds behind the leader.
Schmid showed a strong performance in rollerskis in the pouring rain up the Fichtelberg in front of his German home crowd, defending the finish line.
Meanwhile, his team mate Johannes Rydzek closed the gap to Austrian Franz-Josef Rehrl and finally caught up to him after 7.6 km.
In the long uphill road the German (+16.6 sec) overtook Rehrl (+1:00 min), who couldn’t follow the high speed, and reached the finish line in second place.
