Avoriaz (Haute-Savoie, France) | Ski Resorts

Avoriaz is a French ski resort that stands out for its commitment to sustainable development. Entirely pedestrian, this resort strictly prohibits all cars. The resort is a vast circuit of skiable slopes, where you can access the foot of the high wooden chalets without taking off your shoes. Located in the heart of the Portes du Soleil area, it is right on the heels of the title holder, the 3 Valleys, and is second on the podium of the world’s largest. In total, 12 resorts in France and Switzerland are linked by a network of almost 600 km and 316 downhill ski runs.

Here, the pavements are abandoned for a stay with both feet in the grass. In the streets, walkers rub shoulders with mountain bikers and cyclists, and sometimes you come across horses or skaters. A paradise for children and a unique and magical atmosphere away from the everyday. In Avoriaz everything is accessible on foot, even the bakery. Shortcuts and public lifts allow those in a hurry to cross the resort on foot in less than 15 minutes.

Today, the city is chasing cars away and pedestrians are reclaiming the space, synonymous with walking and well-being. But at the beginning of the 1960s, in the era of the all-powerful car, imagining a resort without cars was an aberration, a madness, an idea of genius. Avoriaz 1800 has continued to integrate each new building into this precursory scheme, each building is less than 10 minutes from the centre. You lose your urban references, you are out of the ordinary, and your holidays can begin.
