From September 2 to 8, 2024, the Nature and Culture Week in the Saas-Fee/Saastal destination invites you on a diverse journey of discovery through the history and geology of the Saas Valley.

This event focuses on the connection between the Saas Valley and the Three Lakes Region through the Allalin Gabbro, the Mattmark disaster of 1965 and the region’s historical treasures.

The program includes exciting tours, lectures and workshops that introduce participants to the region’s natural and cultural treasures. Highlights include lectures and tours on the history of the Saas Snow Mountains by Professor Lukas Baumgartner from the University of Lausanne , who explains the formation of the high mountains and the special features of the Allalin, Strahl and Rimpfischhorn as well as the Mischabel group with the cathedral. Professor Christian Schlüchter from the University of Bern reports on the advances of the Alpine glaciers 22,000 years ago and their effects on the Swiss Mittelland. A special event is the tour of the Mattmark catastrophe of 1965, during which contemporary witnesses on site report on the events of August 30, 1965 and give a historical review. The program is complemented by a lecture by Dr. Peter Thomet and Dr. Christoph Nitsche on the distribution and prehistoric use of the Allalin gabbro in the Three Lakes Region.

The workshops and culinary highlights of the week offer special experiences. In the stone grinding course, participants can discover and work on the beauty of four special Saas Valley stones under the guidance of the couple Urs and Theresa Brendle. An exclusive 5-course menu in the Hotel Pirmin Zurbriggen is accompanied by presentations on the beauty of the Allalin Gabbro and an exhibition.
