Early Snow Fall in resorts means early openings!
The European Alps recently had huge snowfall allowing some resorts to open & offer Snow sports, which is a positive sign for the season to come. The early indications are good, holiday bookings are up & there is a rush with manufacturers to ensure products & ‘Covid impacted’ supply chains are able to provide businesses with the required stock in time for the season.
Where is the snow?
Cervinia in Italy is reporting a 60cm base, which for late September is providing some excellent early season Snow conditions. Tignes & Les Deux Alpes, France, are both open & welcomed over 20cm of Fresh snow. Meanwhile, resorts in Switzerland saw less new snowfall, but resorts are still opening early with the popular destination Laxx is planning to open this weekend (2-3 October).
It’s been reported that Snow settled almost everywhere above 2000m & in some places even lower. This has given the Winter Industry a well needed boost of energy & confidence heading into a Winter that many hope will help to recover some of the loses from last season.
In North America, there are strong weather patterns that will impact the season in what is viewed as a positive impact by Snow sports fans. This should be good news for resorts like Whistler, which can have varied Snow conditions based on the local weather systems. Recent storms have allowed some resorts to open soon & some resorts in Colorado opened last weekend. Timberland, Oregon is now open at weekends & received another 20cm of fresh snow recently.
In the Southern Hemisphere the season was rather mixed, but late Snowfall has prolonged the season further with some resorts on the Northern Island of New Zealand extending opening by 2 weeks.
There was even some snowfall in Scotland recently. Albeit a dusting & not much to play around on, but it feels like ‘Winter is coming’, which is really what we all want, right?
